 Gay Pride, Individualism, and Change

Gay Pride, Individualism, and Change

What we’re constantly learning from the activism of the LGBTQ communities and researchers that are following their lead, is that there is no neat, binary system of gender identities. The more language we come up with to express the individualism of gender identity, for instance, the more individualism we espouse.

Why Do We Love to Complain?

Why Do We Love to Complain?

The negative effects of complaining far outweigh the immediate gain of an inflated sense of self. As research shows, relentless complaining wreaks havoc on our health and wellbeing by physiologically changing our brain and amping up the stress hormone, cortisol, which is related to high blood pressure and stress.

Blame and Responsibility

Blame and Responsibility

Blame is an incredibly easy and effortless tactic to use when feeling defensive. If you don’t hold yourself accountable for the consequences of your ways of behaving, thinking, and feeling, you get to continue living life thinking you don’t have any flaws or areas for improvement.

Unplug from Technology And Plug Back Into Your Life

When we are connected to our phones, we are unable to be attentive to those around us; the more you are plugged into your devices, the less you are plugged into your life, and the more you miss out on opportunities for real connection.

Taking Control of Satisfying Your Needs

Olympic Fever

Olympic Fever

I am so excited about the Winter Olympic Games. While I’m not an avid sports fan, I feel we owe it to these dedicated, passionate and very gifted athletes to pay attention to what they’re doing. Beyond the sheer physical strength and stamina that’s necessary for these athletes to arrive at the Olympic Games, I’m also impressed by their psychological capacity to handle the stress of it all.

Should I Stay or Should I Go

Should I Stay or Should I Go

Imagine the following scenario: You are on the subway, headed to an important work meeting, and have no time to spare.  All is good until, one stop away from your destination, the train just sits there in the station -- doors open, engine idling. Then you hear the familiar announcement, “Ladies and Gentlemen: We are being held momentarily by the train’s dispatcher. Thank you for your patience.”  After a small eternity, you think to yourself indignantly, “Really?”
