ADDICTION

ADDICTION

ADDICTION & SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Addiction and substance abuse are sometimes a way to escape unhealthy negative emotions; what may start off as a “crutch” to get you through can become a persistent dependence, despite potentially harmful consequences. These substances are not just limited to the usual suspects but can include:

  • Exercise
  • Compulsive spending
  • Food
  • Pornography
  • Sex
  • Prescribed medication
  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Work

Treatments

CBT has shown to be valuable in treating addictive behaviors as part of an overall program of recovery; according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, cognitive-behavioral treatments are one of the most frequently evaluated psychosocial approaches to treat substance use disorders.

We will work together to effectively overcome addictive behaviors, identifying the underlying emotion, learning to recognize situations in which you are most likely to turn to your “crutch”, and develop coping skills to avoid these circumstances and substitute for the harmful addictive behavior. Treatment plans may include twelve step programs, group work, interventions, and in serious cases, referrals to in-patient clinics.

Psychological therapies used at Citron Hennessey include: psychoeducational input, social skills training, behavioral peer intervention and organization training.

BINGE EATING

BINGE EATING

BINGE EATING

When you consume a large amount of food in a short amount of time way past the point of fullness, you are bingeing on food. Bingeing is also characterized by wanting to escape from overwhelming emotions, feeling numb, and feeling remorse or guilt afterwards. Bingeing is also known as compulsive eating or emotional eating and when done for a prolonged period of time, can contribute to obesity and other health issues. Binge eating disorder is often accompanied by other psychological problems as well, such as anxiety, depression, OCD, impulsivity, and personality disorders.

CBT treatment has been demonstrated as a more effective form of treatment for BED than behavioral weight loss programs. The majority of BED individuals achieve remission from binge eating using CBT. It has also been shown to be an effective method to address self-image issues and other related disorders (like depression). Psychological interventions such as psychotherapy and behavioral interventions are often more effective than pharmacological interventions for the treatment of binge eating disorder.

HYPOCHONDRIASIS

Hypochondriasis

INSOMNIA

INSOMNIA

INsomnia

Insomnia, also known as sleeplessness, is a sleep disorder where people have trouble sleeping. They may have difficulty falling asleep, or staying asleep as long as desired. It may result in an increased risk of motor vehicle collisions, as well as problems focusing and learning. Insomnia can be short term, lasting for days or weeks, or long term, lasting more than a month.

CBT has been found to be as effective as medications for the treatment of chronic insomnia. Similarly, anxiety can cause one to avoid social situations, thus reinforcing isolation.

Therapy can help by identifying unhelpful thought patterns that keep you isolated, challenging you to create new ways of thinking and gradually becoming more social. Citron Hennessey clinicians utilize cognitive restructuring, exposure therapy and systematic desensitization to help lessen isolation.

Recurrent panic attacks are often triggered by a specific situation, such as crossing a bridge or speaking in public—especially if that situation has caused a panic attack before. Usually, the panic-inducing situation is one in which you feel endangered and unable to escape.

STRESS

STRESS

STRESS

Stress is a normal and adaptive response to everyday obstacles. The stress response is characterized by the body's reaction to stressors.  The sympathetic nervous system plays a critical role in preparing various systems to deal with the potential problem.  This is a healthy and effective response. However, when you are dealing with chronic, long-term stress, it can take a toll on your mental and physical well-being. Stress is a major contributor to heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, anxiety and depression.

Using a personalized approach, Citron Hennessey will work with you to identify what is causing you stress in your daily life, and how to combat it. Relaxation techniques, problem solving, and time management can all help. Usually the most effective way to deal with stress is through cognitive restructuring, a technique that we use often in CBT to change the way you think about the stressors in your life.
